    Measurement of single event upsets in the ALICE-TPC front-end electronics

    The Time Projection Chamber of the ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider features highly integrated on-detector read-out electronics. It is following the general trend of high energy physics experiments by placing the front-end electronics as close to the detector as possible -- only some 10 cm away from its active volume. Being located close to the beams and the interaction region, the electronics is subject to a moderate radiation load, which allowed us to use commercial off-the-shelf components. However, they needed to be selected and qualified carefully for radiation hardness and means had to be taken to protect their functionality against soft errors, i.e. single event upsets. Here we report on the first measurements of LHC induced radiation effects on ALICE front-end electronics and on how they attest to expectations

    Planetary waves in a coupled chemistry-climate model: analysis techniques and comparison with reanalysis data

    International audienceThis paper presents several analysis techniques relating to large-scale atmospheric waves. Such analysis tools allow the extraction of planetary waves from reanalysis or model datasets, and can contribute to a detailed insight into the forcing, propagation, and vertical structure of planetary waves, and their dynamic impact on the atmosphere. The different tools presented here use time series of space Fourier coefficients in order to extract transient and stationary wave parts by zonal wavenumbers, and to quantify their dynamic effect in the form of sensible heat and momentum fluxes. In this work, they have been applied to model results from the coupled chemistry-climate model ECHAM4.L39(DLR)/CHEM (E39/C) (Hein et al., 2001) and to the ERA-15 reanalysis dataset from ECMWF. We show that E39/C qualitatively matches the variance distribution and vertical structure of transient waves from reanalysis data; quantitative differences can be traced back to the horizontal model resolution and the modelled zonal winds. The modelled polar vortex during Northern Hemisphere winter has previously been shown to be colder and more stable than observed (Hein et al., 2001; Schnadt et al., 2002; a possible explanation is that in the model experiment, a reduced heat flux by long transient waves at high latitudes disturbs and warms the polar vortex less than ERA-15 suggests, thereby leading to an overestimated stationary wavenumber 1 in E39/C. The results show that the tools used are well suited to investigate and estimate the impact of various dynamic processes related to large-scale waves

    Water quality awareness and barriers to safe water provisioning in informal communities: A case study from Ndola, Zambia

    Local water providers in developing nations typically view shallow hand-dug wells as traditional and backward sources of water supply. It has long been assumed that the urban poor do not have the ability to develop these in a way that allows them to be classified as ‘improved’ in terms of the Millennium Development Goal for water, believing that users do not understand the factors that constitute safe water and the threats to these sources. Our assessment of the level of environmental knowledge held by local water-users in Ndola in Zambia demonstrates a coherent understanding of the safety of their water sources, the quality of these, the threats to them, and the fundamentals of how their local hydrology works, all of which is contrary to the perspective of key informants who are involved in water supply. Despite their environmental awareness, the majority of users did not generally protect their wells from contamination nor treat their water. The apparent paradox between awareness of risks to water and implementing protection of that water source is a function of the complex suite of socially manifested attitudes, habits and behaviours when it comes to water protection and treatment, which is exacerbated by vulnerable community and family structures and entrenched poverty. For meaningful outcomes in improved access to safe water to be realised providers need to increase their engagement with the informal communities, moving deeper into community-based participatory planning and recognise the societal and cultural factors that are entrained into these communities water supply practices. A key part of this involves the need for providers to move away from simple knowledge-based education to the more holistic form of skill-based health education

    The Effects of Storytelling on Happiness and Resilience in Older Adults

    A person’s mind, body and spirit each age at a different pace. Several studies suggest that resilient older adults are happier and tend to report a better quality of life, regardless of actual health status. Studies also suggest that storytelling is one way to build happiness and resilience. We focused on storytelling as an intervention to build resilience in older adults. This study differs from previous studies in that we wanted to know if resilience could be affected in the short-term. The empirical culture of inquiry led us to use a case study method with a quasi-experimental design. We structured five weekly storytelling groups with eight older adults and measured the change in happiness and resilience before, during and after the 5-week program. We used descriptive statistics and thematic analyses. Results suggest that short-term storytelling is effective for increasing characteristics of happiness and resilience. The implications for short-term interventions to increase resilience may be especially useful for transitional care facilities and health crisis centers

    Droughts in Poland, 1951-90

    One of the negative features of Poland’s climate is the periodic occurrence of atmospheric droughts. The most frequent source of this phenomenon is the occurrence of long-term (sometimes lasting several weeks) rainless periods. The occurrence of these periods is connected with the persistence of a stationary east European high that joins with the Azores anticyclone via central Europe. In such situations, with the accompanying lack or insufficiency of atmospheric precipitation, a drought begins to develop gradually. First, a soil drought appears, followed by hydrologic drought. During a hydrologic drought, a decrease in the ground water flow into surface waters is observed, among other phenomena. This results in the reduction of water flow in rivers. During such periods, a significant drop in the level of underground waters, as well as drying of some springs and small water courses, is observed. In its initial phase of development, a drought exerts its first negative effects on crops. Intensification of this phenomenon also causes disturbances in other sectors of the national economy. Droughts and their negative results do not pose the same threat to all areas of Poland, although in general the influence of droughts is stronger here than in the majority of central European countries. This situation is the result of a combination of natural and historic factors. One of the areas of interest of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) is continuous monitoring and assessment of the course of meteorological and hydrological phenomena occurring in all areas of Poland. When preparing an analysis of the course of successive periods of drought spells, specialists from the IMGW branch in Poznan noticed the absence of similar studies of this phenomenon in Polish literature. In an attempt to fill this gap, they catalogued all droughts that occurred in Poland from 1951 to 1990. The research methods adopted in this study, and also the general characteristics of droughts in Poland, are summarized in this article

    Variable DNA methylation of transposable elements: The case study of mouse Early Transposons

    Phenotypic variation stems from both genetic and epigenetic differences between individuals. In order to elucidate how phenotypes are determined, it is necessary to understand the forces that generate variation in genome sequence as well as its epigenetic state. In both contexts, transposable elements (TEs) may play an important role. It is well established that TE activity is a major generator of genetic variation, but recent research also suggests that TEs contribute to epigenetic variation. Stochastic epigenetic silencing of some TE insertions in mice has been shown to cause phenotypic variability between individuals. However, the prevalence of this phenomenon has never been evaluated. Here, we use 18 insertions of a mouse Endogenous Retrovirus (ERV) family, the Early Transposons (ETns), to detect insertion-dependent determinants of DNA methylation levels and variability between both cells and individuals. We show that the structure and age of insertions influence methylation levels and variability, resulting in a subgroup of loci that displays unexpectedly high variability in methylation and suggesting stochastic events during methylation establishment. Despite variation in methylation according to the age and structure of each locus, homologous CpG sites show similar tendencies in methylation levels across loci, emphasizing the role of the insertion's sequence in methylation determination. Our results show that differences in methylation of ETns between individuals is not a sporadic phenomenon and support the hypothesis that ERVs contribute to phenotypic variability through their stochastic silencing
